WIS Honored by Human Rights Campaign for Work with Welcoming Schools
We are thrilled to share that WIS is the first school in the nation to receive both the Primary and Secondary School Seal of Excellence from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Welcoming Schools Program! Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign, presented the award during a ceremony for all faculty and staff on Friday, June 14. We are so proud to have the hard work of our faculty and staff honored in this way. Some highlights of the work WIS has done to achieve the Seal of Excellence include:
- Starting a Primary School group for LGBTQ+ families that provides a safe, supportive space for connection and community.
- Offering parent sessions that focus on how to affirm and support LGBTQ+ children.
- Enacting policies on the secondary school level to include transgender participation schoolwide, including on sports teams and in locker rooms.
- Incorporating Welcoming Schools lesson plans into the curriculum, in both English and Spanish.
- Establishing a Middle School Pride Club.
