DISCOVER MAKER-CENTERED LEARNING AT WIS

Maker-centered learning looks different in each class: it can be creating stop-motion videos to emphasize conservation, deconstructing a three-dimensional globe to make a two-dimensional map, or using everyday objects in a diorama to demonstrate a deeper understanding of a play.

WIS has fully embraced maker-centered learning, driven in part by a matching grant the School received from the EE Ford Foundation to infuse maker-centered learning practices into the secondary curriculum. A cohort of 15 Middle and Upper school teachers worked directly with a research team from Project Zero’s Agency by Design initiative to explore the benefits of hands-on learning across subject areas.

The Tregaron Campus Alan Reese Design Lab is filled with tools and materials to spark students’ urge to create. Classes centered specifically around design may use the lab, but our language, history, and mathematics teachers regularly incorporate making into their instruction as well. After School clubs offer opportunities for additional investigation.

DESIGN IN THE CURRICULUM

Middle School

Grades 6-8 electives include Design Technology and Digital Media. Faculty make extensive use of The Alan Reese Design Lab, a space that extends the WIS curriculum through maker-centered and design-based learning practices. Through differentiation, students are empowered to demonstrate their understanding in novel ways.

Upper School

Students interested in pursuing degrees in architecture or engineering can gain hands-on experience prior to college by taking IB Diploma Design Technology or Computer Science classes, or through other projects completed in the computer lab or Alan Reese Design Lab. Grades 9-10 electives include Narrative Film, Design Technology, Programming and Physical Computing.
