Holocaust Survivor Eva Clarke Speaks at Upper School Assembly

On February 25, we were honored to welcome Eva Clarke to the Upper School assembly. Eva Clarke was born in April 1945 in the Mauthausen concentration camp, just days before its liberation. Today, she dedicates her time to Holocaust education, ensuring that the past is not forgotten and that future generations understand the importance of remembrance and vigilance against prejudice.

Eva shared her family's story with our community, including that most of her extended family were sent to concentration camps. Eva explained how both her parents were strong and able to work, which kept them from being killed immediately, but they toiled for more than three years. Eva's father was, sadly, killed at Auschwitz–Birkenau just days before it was liberated, while her mother was moved around several places before finally arriving at Mauthausen. Aside from one of her mother's cousins in her native Prague, Eva and her mother were the only survivors of the Holocaust.

Eva's tale was well received by the community, many of whom were eager to speak with her at the end of the assembly.

We are grateful to Eva for taking the time to share her message of strength, resilience, and hope with our community and for the reminder that this dark time in history should never be forgotten.
