KanKouran West African Dance Company Enthralls Students at Special Assemblies
Earlier this week, we were thrilled to welcome members of the KanKouran West African Dance Company to both campuses! Founded in 1983, KanKouran is dedicated to preserving and sharing the vibrant cultural traditions of West Africa, specifically from the Senegambia region. Through their "Visit Africa" program, the WIS community experienced "the electrifying energy of traditional African dance, the powerful rhythms of the drums, and the rich history behind these incredible art forms."
The performers introduced the community to traditional music, instruments, and dances from several West African countries, including Senegal and Ghana. The founder, Assane Konte, explained that before Africa was colonized by the British and the French, people would often use drums and music to communicate. They performed several songs, incorporating different instruments and dances, and encouraged the audience to clap along to the beat. Several Middle and Upper School students even had the opportunity to get on stage and perform with them!
We are grateful to these talented musicians and dancers for taking time out of their busy days to share their wonderful traditions with our community!
